Stepping Stones Preschool is a small, privately owned preschool licensed by the State of New York. Stepping Stones incorporates the philosophy and methods of Maria Montessori in its teaching practices and its trained and certified staff are devoted to the nurturing and education of three, four and five year old children. Our goal is to help children grow into individuals who are confident, respectful, responsible, kind, and compassionate.
Stepping Stones is located in downtown Ithaca, just minutes away from Ithaca College and Cornell University. Stepping Stones is within walking distance to the library, post office, fire station, playgrounds, and parks. Our location allows us opportunities to take take spontaneous field trips and enjoy all that downtown Ithaca has to offer.
The classroom environment is bright and open and the school has both indoor and outdoor play areas. A whimsically painted indoor play area allows for gross motor and imaginary play in cold, wet weather. The outdoor play area includes a weeping cherry tree and four garden boxes for tending and planting. There is also an area for climbing, basketball, digging, hopscotch and more! When weather permits, you will find students exploring nature in their outdoor classroom.
Children explore classroom activities individually and in small groups. Teachers give one on one attention to each child to help them progress at their own level of interest and ability. Small and whole group lessons are given to introduce new activities and to encourage and foster cooperation and patience. Stepping Stones is a warm and nurturing environment for children with a lovely balance of learning and play!
Stepping Stones Preschool strives to create and maintain a diverse student body and welcomes families without regard to race, creed, color or gender.
"We have been very happy with our daughter's experience at Stepping Stones preschool. Stepping Stones offers a classical Montessori education that taught our daughter to be a focused, independent learner, a respectful and loving friend, and an active participant in the world. In addition to learning fundamentals of language, math, science, geography and cultures, our daughter enjoyed formal art lessons based on the works of the great masters, she learned Spanish with fun games and books, and she explored Ithaca's flora and fauna on class walks in the neighborhood. The teachers at Stepping Stones are devoted and passionate, and taught our daughter the most important lesson: that she is a talented, capable person with agency in her own education."
